Domestic Abuse Counselling with Chloë Swinton |
Domestic abuse can affect anyone, but it can be so hard to reach out for help, or know where to turn. I understand it may be difficult to trust a stranger and feel believed, and also why it might be so difficult to leave if you are in a destructive relationship. You may be affected by domestic violence, emotional abuse, mental abuse, financial abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, power and control, coercion or threats, intimidation or isolation. The abuse usually happens on a regular basis and within a relationship or marriage or between family members, or it may have happened some time ago. You are not alone and you are not to blame for any abuse towards you. You do not deserve to be treated this way.
I specialise in providing non-judgemental counselling to people affected by domestic abuse at any point in their life. I have previously worked for a domestic abuse charity and have also therapeutically supported many people who have been affected by abuse of all kinds, over many years, including those who have had to leave quickly and experienced ambiguous loss and grief. By providing one-to-one counselling to adults, I help build self-esteem and self-worth by empathetically listening, understanding, exploring, supporting and empowering people to find their own way forward.
I offer confidential counselling to people of any gender who are currently in an abusive relationship; people who have previously experienced domestic abuse; same sex relationships; to family members; people in a forced marriage; and those who witnessed abuse as a child and find it impacts on their adult relationships. Your age doesn't matter or how you identify, or whether you are single or in a relationship. I'm inclusive and will respect your choices - I will never pressure you to leave a partner or shame you for staying or returning.
I have undertaken extensive domestic abuse, risk assessment and safeguarding training, and in 2017 I became one of Norfolk's Domestic Abuse Champions. I have also co-facilitated a group empowerment programme to help women build self-esteem, understand their experiences, create healthy relationships, and change their lives to become the person they want to be.
